AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Project Identification and Management

Close liaison with clients is a precursor to the development of project initiatives, in the private and public sectors, which meet specific objectives and are carried through to implementation. For example, a customised model was produced to identify agricultural development projects in Thailand that met a specific set of criteria. Locations, partners and funding sources were then identified and an implementation plan devised.
Project Evaluation
This is the ex ante assessment of the economic viability of projects and investments, which is evaluated to UNIDO or World Bank (Little and Mirrlees) guidelines. Risk and sensitivity analyses can be included if required. Recent work has included a full-scale economic analysis of a series of agricultural development projects in Thailand.
Financial Analysis
Financial viability of projects and investments is assessed with expected net present value, and a measure of risk if required, and other common measures such as internal rate of return and payback period. The analysis includes the budgeted cash flow, profit and loss, and balance sheet statements, and can include performance ratios, break-even analysis and sensitivity analysis.
Market Analysis
A review of the dynamics and structural changes relevant to particular projects and businesses including competitors analysis, market evolution, assessment of the threat of new entrants, estimation the bargaining strengths of suppliers and buyers, and the threat from substitute products. Stock adjustment models can be used to estimate product life cycles.
Competitor Analysis
This report estimates the financial strength, organisational structure, production capabilities, distribution and marketing capabilities of identified companies. This is particularly important in privatisations, joint ventures, project investments and M&A.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Performance measures can be devised to effectively monitor established projects, and evaluation can be carried out, either on a one-off basis or on-going, into projects and business initiatives, using statistical and econometric methods, and qualitative analyses as appropriate.
Feasibility Studies
An independent opinion of the financial and/or economic feasibility of proposed projects is determined, as described above in Project Evaluation and Financial Analysis.
Econometrics
Econometric analysis is an extension of statistical analysis that controls for exogenous or endogenous influences, which may otherwise lead to ambiguous or unreliable results. It is particularly useful for project evaluation, ex post, for example, when it is desirable to measure the importance and the impact of different activities on the rural community.
Linear Programming
Linear programming is most commonly used to optimize distribution networks, whether for aircraft or trucks and warehousing. It is also used to optimize farmland and farm labour allocation, and has many other us es. It is a very scarce capability.
Business Valuations
Particularly important in M&A and privatisation transactions, this provides a valuation of a business based on its revalued net assets and its net present value under several appropriate scenarios, to provide a minimum value and maximum expected value for negotiations, either for buyer or seller. Such issues as pension liabilities and land and equipment lease/purchase values are particular considerations.
Business Plans
Full business plans, including marketing strategies and financial projections are produced, customized to sponsor’s requirements.
Qualitative Research
In-depth executive interviews, survey techniques and comprehensive desk research are combined to provide accurate, concise and usable information tailored to the specific requirements of clients. The data can be analysed by statistical and econometric methods. An extensive range of contacts across a range of sectors and regions enables additional insight.
Statistical Analysis
Primary and secondary data can be analysed using a range of parametric and non-parametric methods to test whether hypotheses are statistically significant. An example is to test whether there is a difference between using fertilizer and not using fertilizer, in the same locale.
Opportunity Scoping
Countries and markets are assessed to identify opportunities for new initiatives or expansion in a client’s sector.
Country Risk Analysis
This considers the risk involved in investments and projects through a qualitative and quantitati ve report on the economy, policies and debt of a country. Internal and external factors, the investment climate, and specific operational issues are also analysed.
Portfolio Management
Portfolio investment can be assessed, either from the point of view of market trading and investment, or direct investment, with emphasis on optimizing the risk and return profile following Markowitz’s efficient frontier from “Portfolio Selection”, either by matrices or linear programming. This is particularly useful for pension funds, investment funds, project funders, commercial lenders and project sponsors managing a series of projects or participants.
Capital Markets Analysis
Strong contacts in the corporate finance, investment banking and securities industry are combined with expert knowledge on market analysis to produce both historical analysis and projections, using event studies (Fama et al.), the CAPM model (Sharpe et al), and other methods.
Finance Sourcing
Extensive private and development sector contacts and experience is drawn on to help clients source funding for new or expanding projects and business initiatives.
Database Management
Large databases of stock exchange data, for 500+ stocks, have been compiled, managed and analysed. The results have been used by finance houses and published on the web, involving over 5,000 web pages, created on the fly. Other relational data systems have be created with over 7,000 records, using proprietary systems, access and MySQL.
Publishing (print and electronic)
Extensive editor ial experience in business and finance publishing can be harnessed to produce on-off or regular publications ranging from press releases and speeches to brochures and magazines. The content, design and establishment of websites is also undertaken.
