Standard Chartered Bank in Zambia has so far raised ZMK20 million towards its group’s global ambition of collecting US$10 million (ZMK37 billion) for restoring sight under the latest phase of its ‘Seeing is Believing’ project.
The local bank announced the funds to mark World Sight Day recently.
“Although we are conscious that countries like Zambia and many others in Africa are beneficiaries of our donation funds, we would still like to engage our customers, suppliers and our business associates in this worthy cause. “The donations will remind us of how lucky we are to have full sight and in so doing to lend a hand in helping others who cannot see. This is how we can all make a difference,” said managing director Tom Aaker.
“Blindness is a global challenge that we can only combat if businesses, individuals and the members of VISION 2020 work together. “Standard Chartered has pledged to raise US$10 million to have an impact on 10 million people,” he added.
Aaker further explained that US$5 million of the global figure would come from the bank’s balance sheet as matched giving, while the other US$5 million would be raised from employee involvement through fundraising activities involving customers, suppliers and business associates.
