ISSUE: q406 01/11/2006 New South African joint venture to cover Zambia Motor giants Isuzu and General Motors have formed a joint venture to sell trucks in South Africa and other countries in the region, including Zambia. The new business, Isuzu Truck South Africa, will implement marketing and sales of Isuzu commercial vehicles, while General Motors South Africa will continue to handle its pick-up and passenger car business. Isuzu claimed a market share of 8 percent of the 2005 commercial vehicle sales in the region being covered and plans to up that to 13 percent, or 3,500 vehicles, next year, and 20 percent by 2010. Isuzu said its commercial vehicle sales currently ranked fifth in South Africa, while the market leader was the Daimler Group with the market share of 22 percent. ”In South Africa, the 2005 automobile industry sales are 556,000 units, of which 27,000 units are commercial vehicles. “The 2010 automobile industry sales are expected to expand to 800,000 units, of which commercial vehicles will exceed 31,000 units. The South African market scale is likely to grow as big as the Australian market scale,” said the new company in a press release. Date: q406 |
