ISSUE: q406 01/11/2006 Trade mission builds bilateral ties The Export Board of Zambia (EBZ) with support from the European Union Export Development Programme (EDP II) undertook a trade mission to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo recently. The objective of this mission was to showcase Zambian products at an exhibition that was held for three days in the heart of the sprawling city. Approximately 25 companies participated in the trade fair, including Parmalat, Sunrise Biscuits, Invesco of Ndola, Manzi Natural Valley, Zambia Bata Shoe Company, Savanna Beef Company, Hi-Protein Foods, Zambia Sugar, Pharmanova, ZAMEFA, Ndola Lime Company, Zamseed, Pannar Seeds, Kamano Seeds, Unified Chemicals, Unity Group of Ndola. Sylva catering attracted a lot of interest from the Congolese because of their indigenous Zambian foods. Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, which was graced by a powerful delegation from the Congolese government and led by the deputy governor of Katanga Province, Export Board of Zambia board member Mrs Muwo implored Zambian companies to take advantage of the proximity of Katanga province to exploit the opportunities that were available in the mineral-rich province. She also urged the two governments to consider putting in place a bilateral agreement that would enhance trade between the two countries, and encouraged both Zambian and Congolese business people to engage in meaningful business transactions that would be benefit the two neighboring countries. Most companies expressed satisfaction at the way the fair had been organised. More than 10,000 people passed through the stands. Congolese were impressed with the high quality of products that were displayed at various stands. Zambian companies also received a lot of enquiries from potential buyers. Infact, over US$20m worth of orders were generated during the trade show. Zambia is the second largest exporter of goods and services to Katanga Province in the DR Congo, South Africa being first. It is in this vein that the EBZ is urged to continue with such interventions that will enable companies to exploit foreign markets. This will boost production and create more employment especially in the manufacturing sector. Small- and medium-s ized enterprises (SMEs) such as Kamano Seeds and Sylva foods should take advantage of such fairs to showcase the indigenous products in foreign markets, thus generating more foreign exchange.
