The Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Association of Zambia mourns the tragic death of Sean, Fiona, Michael and Caroline Hayden on August 6, 2006.
Sean and Fiona have been particularly faithful servants of the society for more than 40 years and their names are synonymous with the Kafwala Wildlife camp in Kafue National Park.
For very many years and little reward, Sean managed to maintain and manage this most beautiful spot on earth and to this day it has remained as undisturbed as possible as a true reminder of the stalwart men and women who gave so much of their time to the conservation of wildlife in this beautiful country.
The Kafwala Wildlife camp was given to Wildlife Society in perpetuity for the incredible efforts of the members during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s with Operation Noah, which saved the lives of thousands of animals as Kariba dam filled.
The Hayden family and Sean in particular will always be remembered for the urgent last minute dashes to the Kafwala camp, generally late at night and often to rectify some very minor problem.
Sean always laughed about one such 800 km trip from Kabwe, which required a forefinger and a prod, to repair a stuck toilet float valve for some rather helpless guests.
Sean always dreamed of and also wished that upon closing camp in November it would so happen that the rains would catch them there, and they would have to remain in camp until April.
As the remaining members of the Kabwe branch we will undertake to preserve the camp exactly as Sean and Fiona have always wanted and expected. We will ensure that Kafwala remains exactly as they would have wished and all our thoughts and actions will be guided by them.
May the Hayden’s dedication to nature conservation always remain an inspiration to all conservationists.
