WATER STEWARDSHIP IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY – ZB

Zambian Breweries hosts stakeholder tour of its Lusaka Mungwi Plant ahead of World Water Day
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Zambian Breweries recently hosted a stakeholder tour of its Lusaka Mungwi Plant, engaging key players in discussions on sustainable water management leading up to the commemoration of World Water Day on 22nd March 2025. Attendees had firsthand exposure to the brewing giant’s water conservation efforts, showcasing best practices in water usage efficiency, recycling, and environmental responsibility.
The event brought together representatives from both the private and public sectors such as the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Ministry of Green Economy, GIZ, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO), Lusaka Water Security Initiative (LuWSI), the Kafue Basin Joint Action Group, Chilanga Cement, and several others.
LuWSI Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Sandra Ngozo, emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in managing water resources stating that: “While Zambian Breweries is focused on beer manufacturing, the brewer is also making efforts to conserve the environment and promote sustainable development.”
“It is critical to share stewardship best practices to other players in the sector. Water stewardship is a collaborative effort, and together, we can conserve our water resources,” she added.
WWF’s Private Sector Engagement Coordinator, Gershom Pule, further highlighted the need for collective action: “Water is a shared resource, and this presents complexities in addressing collective challenges. Without collaboration, it will be difficult to effectively tackle the water-related issues that affect almost every stakeholder in the country.”
As a major ingredient in its products and production processes, Zambian Breweries considers water a very valuable resource, and with World Water Day approaching, the brewer reaffirmed its dedication to championing water stewardship, ensuring its operations remain both efficient and environmentally responsible.
Addressing the attendees, Zambian Breweries Director Legal and Corporate Affairs, Tawanda Hojane stated: “As Zambia’s largest beer manufacturer, water is at the heart of what we do. But beyond brewing, we recognize that water is a shared and finite resource that must be protected for the prosperity of our communities, industries, and future generations.”
“Water stewardship is a core pillar of our sustainability agenda. At Zambian Breweries, we continue to invest in cutting-edge technologies to optimize water usage. This visit to our Mungwi Road facility by colleagues from various ministries and organizations fosters knowledge-sharing and reinforces our commitment to responsible water management,” Mr. Hojane added.
The visit concluded with a strong call to action for government agencies, NGOs, industry partners, communities, and all stakeholders to take up an even more active role in sustainable water management in order to secure Zambia’s water resources for the future.
