MOSI: FIVE DECADES OF THUNDERING TOGETHER

Zambian Breweries Celebrates 50 Years of Zambia’s Iconic Mosi Beer Alongside 61 Years of Independence
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – As Zambia celebrates 61 years of independence and reflects on its journey of unity, progress, and the life stories that have inspired generations, Zambian Breweries is lifting up the national flag with the captivating story of Mosi Premium Lager, a beer brewed from the same spirit of resilience and hope that is woven into the very fabric of Zambia’s history.
Drawing its name from the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls — The Smoke that Thunders — in the nation’s tourist capital of Livingstone, the beer symbolises the strength and spirit of Zambia itself.
Born of Freedom
Since its debut in 1975, Mosi has symbolised the Zambian identity and embodied the optimism of a young nation finding its voice and crafting its destiny to the vibrant, youthful and innovative energy that defines the country today.
Speaking at the Thundering Together for 50 Years launch, Zambian Breweries National Sales Director Jacques Els stated that: “When Zambia took its first steps as a free and independent nation, a dream was born; a dream of unity, pride, and progress. About a decade later, that same spirit found its way into a bottle.”
“For fifty years, Mosi has echoed the spirit of a nation that thunders as mightily as the Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls,” added Mr Els.
Heritage Brewed in Zambia
Five decades in, Mosi has grown into a national emblem that is enjoyed by Zambians everywhere; whether at home, in the humble township bar, a five-star resort or somewhere in the diaspora, Mosi brings people together. And just like the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls, reflected in every bottle and refreshing sip is a beauty, power, and authenticity that is truly Zambian.
“Brewed with local ingredients, nurtured by Zambian hands, and refined through Zambian craftsmanship, Mosi has proudly carried the name of our iconic Mosi-oa-Tunya to the world and is a symbol of our heritage, our industry, and our people,” said Zambian Breweries Head of Marketing Susan Luneta.
Global Recognition: Mosi Ku Chalo
Mosi’s quality speaks for itself, and the world has taken notice. From 2017 to date, it has earned five Monde Selection Gold Quality Awards, one of the highest honours in global brewing. This recognition places Mosi among the world’s finest beers, a testament to the skill, dedication, and craftsmanship of its brewers, past and present.
“This recognition proves that when Zambians create, we do so to world-class standards,” added Ms Luneta.
Thundering Together for 50 Years
From Oktoberfest to the upcoming Legends Night in Ndola, Mosi continues to bring Zambians together through music, entertainment, and shared celebration, which echoes the nation’s enduring spirit of togetherness.
To mark its golden jubilee in 2025, Zambian Breweries has launched the Thundering Together for 50 Years campaign, celebrating unity, culture, and progress that invites every Mosi lover to be part of the journey.
At the heart of the campaign is the Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Pack, adorned with a Golden Jubilee-coloured message at the label bottom and a Gold Racetrack-adapted ribbon.
Mosi fans have a chance to win their share of K500,000 through the “THUNDER FOR 50” promotion. Each 375ml or 750ml Limited Edition pack carries a unique 7-digit code under the crown. Consumers simply text the code to *384*50# for a chance to receive cash prizes via mobile money.
“Every activation, every event, every pack reminds us of what it means to be truly Zambian. Through this campaign, we are celebrating both a brand, and a shared identity — the pride, the culture, and the joy that unite us,” said Zambian Breweries Brand Manager Lusungu Ng’uni.
Brewed with Purpose
Mosi Premium Lager was envisioned as a truly Zambian beer — crafted by Zambians, for Zambians. Today, it stands not only as a cultural icon but also as a vital contributor to the nation’s economy and social development, creating and supporting jobs in agriculture and tourism and hospitality.
Beyond celebration, Mosi embodies Zambian Breweries’ commitment to economic empowerment and community development. Through initiatives such as GRIT (Growing Retailers Innovatively Together), the company is building capacity in its retailers and entrepreneurs to run sustainable businesses.
Zambian Breweries also continues to invest in local agriculture, sourcing its raw materials from Zambian farmers, while investing in world-class production facilities to ensure sustainable growth and job creation.
“Every bottle of Mosi tells a story of partnership — between our farmers and our brewers, our retailers and our distributors, our customers – our people and our nation,” said ZB National Sales Director Jacques Els.
“When Zambia grows, so does Zambian Breweries; and when we thrive, so too does Zambia,” he said.
Cheers to Zambia
As the nation raises its flag this Independence Day, Mosi raises a toast to the people who built this country and to the generations that will carry it forward. Because Zambia’s story — like Mosi’s — continues to thunder.
Cheers to 50 years of Mosi. Cheers to 61 years of Zambia.
