SCHOOL TECH MAKEOVER INSPIRES FIRST QUANTUM TO RALLY SUPPLIERS BEHIND COMMUNITY GROWTH

SOLWEZI, ZAMBIA – First Quantum has hailed long-time supplier AMSI Zambia for setting a new benchmark in supplier-driven community development, following the construction and handover of a computer laboratory at Kimale Primary School in Solwezi.
The project has drawn widespread praise, particularly from Solwezi Mayor His Worship Remmy Kalepa, who described the donation as a powerful investment in the district’s future.
“You didn’t just build a room you built a gateway to the 21st century,” said Mayor Kalepa. “Computer skills are no longer a luxury; they are a necessity that unlocks opportunities for education, employment, and innovation.”
AMSI Zambia Director of Finance and Administration, Jacob Zimba, said the company’s continued support to the school reflects its belief that education is the foundation of sustainable development.
“Education transforms households, strengthens communities, and opens doors for children to dream bigger,” he said. “This facility is a reflection of AMSI’s commitment to contributing modern, relevant infrastructure for the young people of Solwezi.”
AMSI has been an ongoing partner to Kimale Primary, previously donating 100 pockets of cement and renovating classroom blocks, including flooring, painting, and fitting new window panes.
To complement AMSI’s effort and enhance digital learning, Kansanshi Mining PLC, a subsidiary of First Quantum, donated an additional 10 computers, bringing its total support to 15 computers for the school. The donation aims to ensure more learners have access to digital tools and are better prepared for an increasingly technology-driven world.
Kansanshi Foundation Manager Simon Keevil applauded AMSI for demonstrating what meaningful supplier partnerships can achieve.
“AMSI has shown what true partnership looks like going beyond commerce to touch lives and uplift communities,” said Mr Keevil. “We encourage all our suppliers to follow this example. CSR is not the responsibility of one institution alone; it is a shared effort.”
He noted that with the rapid growth of the mining sector in North-Western Province, suppliers play an even more critical role in shaping sustainable socio-economic development.
“When suppliers invest in the communities where they operate, the impact is deeper, more sustainable, and more widely shared,” he added.
AMSI’s ongoing contributions spanning education, community welfare, and support to vulnerable groups have reinforced a shared vision of making Solwezi and the wider North-Western Province a thriving, inclusive, and empowered region.
First Quantum reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of shared responsibility across its supply chain, emphasising that sustainable development is strongest when industry, suppliers, communities, and local leadership work hand in hand.
