A lifetime of art captures the essence of rural England

Mrs Pat Langmead (1926-2021), spent much of her life painting, drawing and perfecting work in a range of techniques and mediums, from charcoal to oils, and from acrylics to pastel.

FERNHURST, SURREY – A small selection of the extraordinary lifetime’s work of West Sussex artist Pat Langmead will come up for auction at John Nicholson’s auctioneers in Fernhurst on November 24, 2021.

Mrs Langmead (1926-2021), who died this year at the age of 94, spent much of her life painting, drawing and perfecting work in a range of techniques and mediums, from charcoal to oils, and from acrylics to pastel.

While she is best known as a pastel portrait artist, travelling across Europe for sittings; her versatility encompassed still lifes, nudes, and the landscapes that form the heart of this month’s auction.

Mrs Langmead captured the essence of the landscape in West Sussex, where she lived for much of her life, in a series of oils and pastels and mixed media, from the majesty of the South Downs to the magical twilight of woodlands near her home in Midhurst. A vibrant scene of a South Downs field of poppies in bloom in mixed media is particularly poignant.

The head of John Nicholson’s picture department, Philip Maggs, explained: “Pat Langmead’s body of work is an important record of the English countryside throughout the seasons. But it is much more than that: it represents a rare combination of a perceptive eye, creative mind and artistic hand that depicts the very heart of our nation in so many facets.
