OVER 600 PUPILS BENEFIT FROM MAAMBA ENERGY’S DENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE

MAAMBA, ZAMBIA – Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) successfully conducted a comprehensive two-day dental outreach camp at Maamba Private School, which was conducted from 02 to 03 March 2026. This significant community health initiative was delivered in collaboration with the Dental Association of Zambia (ZDA).

The programme was aimed at identifying and addressing oral health concerns of pupils, which could potentially impact their well-being, school attendance, and academic performance. During the event, more than 600 learners ranging from pre-school to Form 2 underwent professional dental screenings.

This initiative underscores MEL’s steadfast commitment to the health, holistic development, and long-term prosperity of the local community.

Speaking at the launch of the event, Maamba Energy Limited Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Ms Lomthunzi Mbewe said the initiative forms part of the company’s broader healthcare support agenda within the community.

“We have partnered with the Zambia Dental Association to provide access to specialist dental surgeons from Lusaka and Choma. Beyond screenings, we are providing every child with a free dental care pack including mouthwash, toothpaste, and a toothbrush to ensure the message of oral hygiene reaches the home,” Ms Mbewe explained. These have been distributed to the learners in collaboration with Colgate Palmolive and Yash Life Sciences.

Ms Lomthunzi added: “This follows the success of our eye camp held a few weeks ago. Our focus is firmly on preventative care. By identifying issues early, we can educate children on the importance of oral hygiene before problems arise.”

The Zambia Dental Association (ZDA) president, Dr Gabriel Mpundu, emphasised the importance of early intervention in establishing lifelong health habits.

“The ZDA has entered into this partnership with Maamba Energy Limited to conduct regular oral health checks for the community. Our objective is to see a nation with excellent oral hygiene and MEL shares this vision for their area of operation.

By interacting with children at this young age, we can inculcate a culture of regular check-ups and correct minor issues before they become debilitating. We also educated the parents, as they are the primary supervisors of their children’s hygiene routines. This partnership is a win for everyone, it improves community health and reduces the number of work hours parents lose to family dental emergencies,” Dr Mpundu said.

Maamba Private School Principal, Mrs Justina Nakaundi Kaonga expressed gratitude to the parents of the learners and to MEL for the initiative, noting the direct link between physical health and classroom performance.

“A healthy child is 100 percent more likely to pay attention and succeed academically. As the saying goes, ‘health is wealth.’ Seeing the children interact through songs and poems about dental care shows how receptive they are to this information. With the support of their parents as custodians of this knowledge, we are ensuring our pupils have brighter smiles and a better future,” she said.

The dental outreach programme forms part of Maamba Energy Limited’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, which continues to prioritise healthcare, education, and sustainable community development in the region.
