Airtel Africa Foundation has committed over K12 million to expand Education infrastructure across five provinces; a nationwide effort to expand access to safe, modern learning environments.

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Airtel Zambia through its’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm Airtel Africa Foundation, has launched a nationwide school infrastructure initiative with the simultaneous groundbreaking of five construction and refurbishment projects under its flagship ‘Adopt-A-School’ programme.

The initiative, in partnership with the Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS) and Ministry of Education, represents an investment of more than K12 million and is scheduled for completion and handover before the start of the second school term in April 2026.

The groundbreaking ceremonies were held simultaneously across five provinces; Western (Mongu), Eastern (Chipata), Copperbelt (Mufulira), North-Western (Solwezi) and Luapula (Mansa), marking the beginning of works that will improve learning conditions for learners in the five participating communities.

Commenting on the initiative, Airtel Zambia Managing Director Hussam Baday said: “This investment reflects our long-term commitment to supporting Zambia’s education system in a practical and sustainable way. Infrastructure remains a major barrier for many learners, and we believe the private sector has a responsibility to help close that gap. By upgrading classrooms and facilities, we are investing in the potential of young people and contributing to stronger, more resilient communities.”

Speaking during the ceremony in Mansa, Luapula Province at Mwela School, Airtel Zambia Zonal Business Manager, Kelvin Silavwe, emphasised the programme’s strategic importance:

“While today is symbolic, the transformation that follows is tangible. Our focus is on reducing infrastructure gaps and ensuring that every learner has a genuine opportunity to thrive. A classroom is more than a structure; it is the space where confidence grows and aspirations take shape.”

And Headteacher, Ms Annie Kapala commended Airtel for thinking of the rural schools saying the school couldn’t wait for the buildings to be completed.

The Adopt-A-School programme has previously delivered new and refurbished facilities in Lusaka, Central, Copperbelt and Southern Provinces. The 2025/2026 phase expands this footprint, with construction beginning immediately at all five new locations.

Airtel also recognised its long-standing partnership with Zambia Open Community Schools, whose sustained work in community development has been pivotal to implementing such projects. The company also acknowledged the Ministry of Education for its guidance and oversight in ensuring that the facilities meet national standards.

“Investing in education strengthens families, communities and ultimately the future of our nation,” Silavwe added. “We encourage parents, teachers and community leaders to take ownership of this initiative. Their support and vigilance throughout the construction process will be key to ensuring long-term sustainability.”
